 EASSy declaration signed by Africa ministers

 Africa's software independence struggle
20/09/2006 (FOSSFA) -- The Free Software and Open Source Foundation for Africa has spelled out how African governments can benefit directly from supporting the open source movement on the continent. In a media release marking Software Freedom Day it said open source means better security, developing local capacity, innovation and creativity, economic independence and sovereignity.  NGOs call for WIPO reform
21/09/2006 (IPJustice) -- Non-governmental organisations from across the globe have signed a statement urging the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to adopt a development agenda. WIPO is an international treaty-making body within the United Nations that aims to stardardize intellectual property laws across the globe. Led by Brazil and Argentina, the NGOs say WIPO is too focused on maximizing intellectual property rights.  WSIS: Whose information society?

 From Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships to Public-Private Ones
29/06/2005 -- The WSIS Thematic Meeting announced on the ITU web site as "Government of Germany - International Policy Dialogue: 'Mainstreaming ICT for Development: the Key Role of the Private Sector'," drew about 50 participants on 21 and 22 June. It departed decisively from the WSIS framework of multi-stakeholderism and focused on public-private partnerships (PPPs). Civil society participants were allowed to attend, but their interest in this two-day event seemed next to non-existent. They did not miss much, except good food and very interesting conversations during the breaks. International | WSIS
 Discussions on Implementation and Follow-Up After WSIS
27/06/2005 -- Discussions on how to proceed after the second WSIS summit in November are getting more urgent. There is a danger of this question to be lost due to the dominance of financing and internet governance negotiations in the second phase of WSIS. A recent meeting of the “Group of the Friends of the Chair” (GFC) in Geneva tried to bring some clarity, but a consensus is still far away. Meanwhile, civil society groups are lamenting the fact that they will be locked out of the next GFC meetings. International | WSIS

 ‘Spits and spurts’ ICT advocacy and the media in Africa – the CATIA experience
18/10/2005 -- The media can be active catalysts for change in Africa, and don’t have to be neutral bystanders as the complex ICT landscape on the continent unfolds. That’s one of the findings of a report commissioned by Catalysing Access to ICTs in Africa (CATIA), a three year programme funded by the Department for International Development in collaboration with other donors.
