Kenya: Regulator licenses more Internet companies

01/14/2005 (East African Standard) -- Two more players in the Internet Backbone and International Gateway market segment were licensed yesterday. The two - Kenya Data Networks (KDN) and Jamii Telecoms-were licensed by the Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK) and are expected to compete with the Government-owned Jambonet.

According to a news item from the East African Standard, the CCK has also licensed another company AfSAT Communications as a commercial VSAT Operator.

CCK Director-General, Sammy Kirui, said the introduction of competition in these business segments is a culmination of the licensing strategy unveiled by the commission in September last year.

The strategy aimed at liberalising the ICT sector, which has since been fully freed after the five-year exclusivity period offered to Telkom Kenya expired in June 2004.

The three firms are part of the ten applicants that were approved by the CCK Board last month.
