Kenya: Govt lack of support hampers growth of ICT industry

11/04/2004 (Kenya Times) -- A visiting official of the World Information Technologies Association (WISTA) has said lack of government support is hampering the growth of ICT sector in the country. He was speaking at a press conference in Nairobi, Kenya when he launched the Digital Planet-2004, a biannual reference publication outlining the state of the global ICT industry.

The Executive Director of WISTA Allen Miller said yesterday the government ought to adopt a more open way of dealing with issues related to the sector “to give it momentum for growth”

He was speaking at a press conference in Nairobi when he launched the Digital Planet-2004, a biannual reference publication outlining the state of the global ICT industry.

The press conference was also attended by top officials of the Computer Society of Kenya (SCK) led by its Chairman Waudo Siganga.

“It is time the government in Kenya and the rest of Africa approached the ICT sector with openness and seriousness. There is too much red tape and bureaucracy, which is seriously impeding the growth of the sector,” he said.

Miller has been in the country to meet with industry stakeholders and government officials to strategize on the way forward for the sector. During his stay in the country, he has met with officials from the Ministry of Information and other major stakeholders in the sector.

He said policy matters and legislation “ought to be speeded up in order to give the industry a fair chance”. He noted that rapid changes to the sector were needed to enable Kenya and Africa play a major role in the world economy.
